Scientists from the Tyumen State University and researchers from other scientific institutions in Russia have discovered a natural antibiotic, which has already been called universal. According to scientists, it is able to fight most infectious diseases in humans and animals, provoked by bacteria and fungi, RIA Novosti reports.

The Russians published a description of the discovery in the authoritative scientific journal Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology. Their work could become revolutionary in solving one of the main problems of pharmacology, which consists in finding natural remedies that can effectively resist microorganisms that are not affected by other antibiotics.

Scientists from Tyumen were the first in the world to show a previously unknown ability of peptide emericillipsin A (secreted from the micellial fungus Emericellopsis alkalina) to deprive bacteria of the ability to form biofilms. According to the researchers, the uniqueness of the substance is in its versatility, that is, the ability to act on a wide range of bacteria.

The authors of the study stated that the developed drug is valuable as an independent medicine, and can also be effectively used to create other therapeutic agents.
